Découvertes Gallimard is a cool series of small, illustrated books. It's like a mini-encyclopedia! These books come from a French publisher called Éditions Gallimard. In the United Kingdom, they're called New Horizons. In the United States, they're known as Abrams Discoveries. The very first book, The Search for Ancient Egypt, came out on November 21, 1986. A French expert on ancient Egypt, Jean Vercoutter, wrote it.

What Are These Books About?
The idea for this book series came from Pierre Marchand. It was then managed by Élisabeth de Farcy. There are over 700 books in this collection. Each book focuses on a different topic.
Exploring Many Topics
You can find books on history, archaeology, and different cultures. There are also books about art, science, and technology. Some books tell the story of a famous person's life. Others explore interesting places. The series covers almost everything you can imagine!
Book Design and Features
These books are small, about the size of your hand (125 × 178 mm). They are printed on thick, shiny paper. This makes the many colorful pictures look great. These pictures come from old documents and artworks.
Each book has a special "Documents" section. Here, you can find more detailed information. It also lists where all the amazing illustrations came from. This is helpful if you want to learn even more!
Worldwide Popularity
The Découvertes collection has been translated into over 20 languages. By 1999, more than 20 million copies were sold around the world. In the US, Harry N. Abrams publishes them as Abrams Discoveries. In the UK, Thames & Hudson publishes them as New Horizons books.

The Encyclopédie was the first French encyclopedia. It was created by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert and many others. It was one of the first encyclopedias to look like the ones we know today. It was also the first to include contributions from many named writers. The 100th title, Le Roman vrai de l'Encyclopédie ('True Novel of the Encyclopédie'), is about this important work.
