Private E. Michael Burk (born in 1847 – died February 3, 1878) was a brave soldier from Ireland. He fought for the United States during the American Civil War. Burk earned the Medal of Honor, which is America's highest award for bravery in battle. He received this special award for his actions during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on May 12, 1864. He was given the Medal of Honor on December 1, 1864.

Early Life and Joining the War

E. Michael Burk was born in Ireland in 1847. When he was about 15 years old, he moved to the United States. In August 1862, he joined the 125th New York Infantry. He told the army he was 18, even though he was younger.

Soon after joining, Burk was captured during the Battle of Harpers Ferry. This battle happened in September 1862. Luckily, he was released the very next day.

A Heroic Act

Burk showed great bravery during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. This major battle took place in Virginia on May 12, 1864. For his actions that day, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for military bravery in the United States.

After his heroic act, Burk stayed in the hospital. He remained there until his army unit was officially dismissed from service.

Later Life and Legacy

E. Michael Burk passed away on February 3, 1878. He was 30 or 31 years old. His body was laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery. He is remembered as a brave soldier who served his country with honor.
