A Look at ERTU's History

Egyptian Radio started broadcasting on May 31, 1934. This was done with an agreement with the Marconi Company. Said Basha Lotfi was the general manager for many years.

In December 1947, Egypt decided to have its own national broadcasting station. This station became famous for its call: "This is Cairo" (in Arabic: هنا القاهرة). It is known as the First Program of the ERTU.

Later, more important radio channels were added. These included The Voice of the Arabs (صوت العرب) in 1953. The Egyptian Radio's Second Programme (البرنامج الثاني) started in 1957. Middle East Radio (إذاعة الشرق الأوسط) began in 1964. These stations used strong transmitters. They could reach most of the Middle East, North Africa, and East Africa.
