The surveyors described the land. They said the land was mostly flat or gently rolling. They noted different types of trees like aspen, oak, pine, and birch. They also saw some open grassy areas called prairies.
They found several buildings, including sawmills (which cut wood), homes, and a blacksmith shop. These early settlers were using the river and the land for their lives and work.
The Story of Old Abe
In 1861, a man named Daniel McCann lived in Eagle Point. He met a Native American man named Ahgamahwegezhig. Ahgamahwegezhig had caught a young eagle. He traded the eagle to McCann for a bushel of corn.
McCann then sold this eagle to soldiers from the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This special eagle became their mascot and was named Old Abe. Old Abe traveled with the soldiers and was present during many battles of the Civil War. He became a famous symbol of courage.
