Eamon Duffy (born in 1947) is a well-known Irish historian. He is a retired professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Cambridge in England. He is also a special member and former leader of Magdalene College at Cambridge.

Early Life and Education

Eamon Duffy was born on February 9, 1947, in Dundalk, Ireland. He grew up in a Catholic family. He went to St Philip's School and then studied at the University of Hull. Later, he did more research at the University of Cambridge. His teachers there were Owen Chadwick and Gordon Rupp.

What He Studies

Professor Duffy is an expert in the religious history of Britain from the 1400s to the 1600s. He used to be a member of the Pontifical Historical Commission, which is a group that studies the history of the Catholic Church.

His work has changed how many people think about the Catholic Church in England during the late Middle Ages. Before his research, many thought the Church was weak then. But Professor Duffy showed it was actually a very active and important part of culture.

From 2007, he hosted a BBC Radio 4 series called 10 Popes Who Shook the World. This series talked about important popes like Peter, Leo I, Gregory I, and John Paul II.

In 1979, Duffy started working at Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge. He became a professor of the history of Christianity in 2003 and retired in 2014. Since then, he has been an emeritus professor, meaning he is retired but still connected to the university. In 2004, he became a member of the British Academy, a group that honors top scholars.
