The Earl of Athlone is a special title that has been created three times in history. It's a title of nobility, which means it was given to important people by the King or Queen. The title is named after the town of Athlone in Ireland.

History of the Earldom

The title of Earl of Athlone was first created in 1692. This was part of the Peerage of Ireland, which is a list of noble titles in Ireland. King William III gave the title to Baron van Reede. He was a Dutch nobleman and a general.

The King honored him for winning battles in Ireland, like the Siege of Athlone. Along with the Earl title, he also received a smaller, related title called Baron Aughrim. This first creation of the title ended in 1844 when the 9th Earl died without any sons to inherit it. This is called becoming "extinct." The Earls also held a Dutch noble title, Baron van Reede, which still exists today.

The second time the title was created was in 1890. This was in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which lists noble titles in the UK. It was a smaller title connected to the Dukedom of Clarence and Avondale. This title was given to Prince Albert Victor of Wales. He was the oldest son of the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII. Prince Albert Victor died in 1892, and because he had no children, the title became extinct again.

The third and final time the title was created was in 1917. This was also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was given to Prince Alexander of Teck. He was the younger brother of Queen Mary and the great-uncle of Queen Elizabeth II. He also received the smaller title of Viscount Trematon.

This earldom was given after a law called the Titles Deprivation Act 1917. This law meant that members of the British Royal Family had to give up their German royal titles during World War I. Prince Alexander had two sons, but sadly, they both passed away before him. So, when he died in 1957, the titles became extinct for the third and last time.
