History of Earlimart
How Earlimart Got Its Name
In the early 1890s, this area was called Alila. A famous group called the Dalton Gang was accused of robbing a train here. This train belonged to the Southern Pacific Transportation Company.
The community changed its name to Earlimart in 1910. They chose this name because local farmers grew melons that ripened very early. This meant the melons were "early to market," which led to the name "Earli-mart." The Earlimart branch library in Tulare County opened in October 1914. It was first located in the Alila School.
