East Spencer is a small town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. In 2020, about 1,567 people lived there.
The town was first called "Southern City." This name showed how important the railway was to the area. In 1901, it officially became a town and was named East Spencer. The name came from the Spencer shops, which were big railway workshops that opened nearby in 1896.

Where is East Spencer?
East Spencer is right next to the town of Spencer, North Carolina. It is located just south of Spencer. The tracks of the Southern Railway actually separate the two towns.
The town covers an area of about 1.6 square miles (4.1 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Schools in East Spencer
East Spencer has a history of important schools.
East Spencer Negro School / Dunbar High School
The East Spencer Negro School started in 1900. It was first a one-room school. In 1921, it grew a lot, adding 11 classrooms, an auditorium, a library, an office, and a lunchroom.
In 1958, the school was renamed Dunbar High School. It was named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, a famous poet. In the 1960s, the school became integrated, meaning students of all races could attend. It was then renamed North Rowan Middle School.
Later, in the 1990s, it stopped being a school. It became the Paul Laurence Community Center. The school system owned the building until 2006. Sadly, the building was destroyed by a fire in 2015.
Essie Mae Kiser Foxx Charter School
This charter school is named after Essie Mae Kiser Foxx. She was an important leader in the East Spencer community. The school opened in August 2018.
It is a free public school. It started with grades kindergarten through fourth grade. The plan is to add one grade each year. Eventually, it will teach students from kindergarten all the way to eighth grade. About 150 students are enrolled at the school.
