East Wykeham is a fascinating place in Lincolnshire, England. It's known as a deserted medieval village, or DMV for short. This means it was once a busy village during the Middle Ages, but for some reason, everyone left.

Today, you can still see signs of the old village as earthworks. These are bumps and hollows in the ground. They show where old buildings, roads, and fields used to be. East Wykeham is located near the town of Louth (about 7 miles or 11 km away) and Market Rasen (about 9 miles or 14 km away).

East Wykeham was once a small area, or civil parish, within Ludford. In 1971, only 21 people lived there. On April 1, 1987, the parish officially joined with Ludford.

What is a Deserted Medieval Village?

A deserted medieval village (DMV) is a site where a village existed in the Middle Ages but was later abandoned. People might have left for many reasons. These could include changes in farming, diseases like the Black Death, or even landowners deciding to use the land differently.

At East Wykeham, archaeologists study the earthworks. These clues help them understand how people lived long ago. It's like a giant puzzle left in the landscape!

A Look Back in Time

East Wykeham was first mentioned in records way back in 1316. At that time, it was part of a larger area that included West Wykeham. Later, in 1396, it became part of the Ludford area.

By 1563, only one family was left living in the village. This shows how much the population had shrunk. By 1603-04, the village church was already in ruins. This means it was no longer used and had started to fall apart.

Wykeham Hall and the Old Church

Even though the village was abandoned, a large house called Wykeham Hall survived. It still stands today! The road leading to Wykeham Hall actually passes right through where the old village used to be.

The ruined church of East Wykeham is also still there. Around 1800, it might have been rebuilt as a "folly." A folly is a building made to look old or interesting, often just for decoration. This old church now holds special monuments dedicated to the Child family, who lived at Wykeham Hall.
