Governance Eastwood District Council

Eastwood was a special local government area in Scotland. It was called a 'district' and was part of a larger area known as the Strathclyde region. This district was created in 1975.

Eastwood covered parts of the old Renfrewshire county. It included areas like Eaglesham and Newton Mearns. In 1996, the Eastwood district was changed. It became part of a new area called East Renfrewshire.

How Eastwood Was Governed

Before 1975, Scotland had different ways of managing local areas. There were 'counties' and 'burghs' (towns). In 1975, the government changed how things worked. They created a new two-part system.

This new system had bigger 'regions' and smaller 'districts'. Eastwood was one of these new districts. It was part of the large Strathclyde region. The Eastwood District Council was in charge of local services for the people living there.

End of the District

The way local government worked changed again in 1996. All the districts and regions were removed. The area that was Eastwood District joined with another part of Renfrew District. Together, they formed the new East Renfrewshire council area.

Council Elections

People in Eastwood voted to choose who would represent them on the council. These elections happened regularly. The council had 12 seats, meaning 12 people were elected to make decisions for the district.

The table below shows how many seats different political groups won in the elections:

Year Seats Conservative Labour Liberal Democrats Independent / Other Notes
1974 12 10 0 0 2
1977 12 10 0 0 2
1980 12 9 0 0 3
1984 12 10 0 0 2
1988 12 8 1 1 2
1992 12 8 1 1 2

Council Buildings

The Eastwood District Council first worked from a converted house. This building was at 295 Fenwick Road in Giffnock. It had been used by the previous local council.

In 1980, the council moved into a new building. This new headquarters was built nearby, in the grounds of Eastwood Park. When the Eastwood District Council was abolished in 1996, this building became the main office for the new East Renfrewshire Council.

Parliamentary Areas

The area of Eastwood also had its own representatives in the Scottish and UK parliaments.

  • The Eastwood Westminster constituency was created in 1983. This area elected a Member of Parliament (MP) to the UK Parliament in London. In 2005, its name changed to East Renfrewshire.
  • The Eastwood Holyrood constituency was created in 1999. This area elects a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. This constituency still keeps its original name.
