Where He Came From
Ebenezer Maitland was the only son of Ebenezer Maitland Sr. His father was a successful businessman in London. He also worked as a director for the Bank of England. In 1807, Ebenezer changed his name. He added "Fuller" to his name. This was because his wife's aunt, Sarah Fuller, left him a lot of money in 1810.
His Work and Life
Early Military Role
In 1804, Ebenezer Fuller Maitland was a lieutenant-colonel. This was a high rank in the Reading Volunteers. They were a local military group.
Becoming a Politician
Maitland became a Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to represent people in the government. He represented different areas:
- Lostwithiel starting in 1807.
- Wallingford starting in 1812.
- Chippenham starting in 1826.
He stayed as the MP for Chippenham until 1830. After that, he tried to become the MP for Abingdon but was not successful.
Serving as Sheriff
Maitland also held the important role of High Sheriff. This was a top legal and administrative job in a county.
- He was the Sheriff of Berkshire from 1825 to 1826.
- He was the Sheriff of Breconshire from 1831 to 1832.

His Family
In 1800, when he was 20 years old, Maitland married Bethia. She was born in 1781. Bethia was the only child of Joshua Ellis. Her mother, Esther, was the only child of a very rich banker named William Fuller. People said William Fuller was one of the wealthiest men in England.
Ebenezer and Bethia had twelve children together. Four of their sons and four of their daughters grew up and got married. Their oldest son was William Fuller Maitland. He became famous for collecting art. William Fuller Maitland was also the father of William Fuller-Maitland, who became an MP and a cricketer.
