Echo, Inyo County, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Echo was once a small, temporary settlement in Inyo County, California. It was located high up in the rugged Funeral Mountains, overlooking the famous Death Valley. Unlike many towns, Echo never had permanent buildings. It was mainly a camp for gold miners.

What Was Echo?

Echo was not a typical town with houses and shops. Instead, it was a temporary camp. Workers from the Inyo Gold Mining Company lived there. They set up tents for shelter. When they moved, they took their tents with them. This made Echo a very flexible settlement.

Where Was Echo Located?

Echo was situated on the crest of the Funeral Mountains. These mountains are a part of the vast Death Valley area. It was positioned roughly halfway between two other small places: Lee and Schwaub. Today, the site of Echo is inside the boundaries of Death Valley National Park. This park is known for its extreme heat and unique desert landscapes.

Life at Echo

Life at Echo was likely tough. The miners were searching for gold in the mountains. Even though it was a temporary camp, a telephone line connected Lee and Schwaub. This line passed right through Echo. This might have helped the miners communicate with other areas.

Why Did Echo Disappear?

Echo did not last very long. The Inyo Gold Mining Company could not find enough profitable gold. When better mining opportunities appeared elsewhere, the workers moved on. They took their tents and equipment with them. Today, only a few signs remain of Echo. These include some old tent sites and places where cans were dumped. You might also find pieces of broken glass.
