Echo Lake is a beautiful lake in New Hampshire. It covers about 38 acres of water. You can find it in a special area called Franconia Notch. This notch is part of the amazing White Mountains.
The lake sits right at the bottom of Cannon Mountain. Its water eventually flows into the Connecticut River. This means the water from Echo Lake travels through smaller rivers like Lafayette Brook, Gale River, and Ammonoosuc River. Finally, it reaches the big Connecticut River, which flows all the way to the Atlantic Ocean!
Where is Echo Lake?
Echo Lake is located inside Franconia Notch State Park. The famous Cannon Mountain Ski Area is right next to the lake on its southwest side.
A major highway, Interstate 93, runs along the eastern side of the lake. Another road, New Hampshire Route 18, passes by the northern shore. This is where you'll find a popular swimming beach that's part of the state park.
North of the lake is a small hill called Artists Bluff. It has open rocky areas where you can stand. From here, you get amazing views looking south over Echo Lake and into the heart of Franconia Notch. It's a great spot for photos!
What Lives in the Lake?
Echo Lake is known as a coldwater fishery. This means its water is cool enough for certain types of fish to live there. One of the fish you might find in Echo Lake is the brook trout. These fish love the chilly, clear water of the lake.
