Some major banks and steel companies also changed or left. Even a big chemical company, AstraZeneca, reduced its presence.

In late 2015, DuPont, a very old and important company in Delaware, announced that many employees would be laid off. Later, DuPont merged with Dow Chemical Company to form DowDuPont. These changes show how industries can evolve over time.

Why Companies Choose Delaware

More than half of all publicly traded companies in the U.S. and most of the Fortune 500 companies (the 500 largest companies by revenue) are legally set up, or incorporated, in Delaware.

Delaware is very attractive to businesses because of its special corporation law. This law makes it easy and favorable for companies to incorporate there. The state collects a special fee called a franchise tax from these Delaware corporations, which makes up about one-fifth of the state's income. It's interesting to note that there are more than a million registered corporations in Delaware, which is more than the number of people living there!
