Edward Arnet Johnson, born on May 1, 1959, is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played for 17 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He also spent a year playing in the Greek Basket League during his career.

Eddie Johnson played almost 1,200 games in the NBA. He scored a lot of points, ranking high among players who never made it to an NBA All-Star Game. As of the 2018–19 NBA season, he was 52nd in all-time points scored. He is also known for being a TV analyst for the Phoenix Suns and co-hosting NBA Today on Sirius XM NBA Radio.

Early Life and College Basketball

Eddie Johnson went to Westinghouse High School in Chicago. He was a great shooter, standing 6 feet 7 inches tall. After high school, he studied history at the University of Illinois.

In 1981, the Kansas City Kings picked him in the 1981 NBA draft. Fans of the Fighting Illini remember him for a special game. He made a game-winning shot against Michigan State University. At that time, Michigan State was undefeated and ranked #1 in the country. They had future NBA superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson on their team. Illinois was also undefeated at 14–0. Eddie's shot gave Illinois a 15–0 record and the #2 national ranking.

In 2004, Eddie Johnson was chosen for the "Illini Men's Basketball All-Century Team." He was also inducted into the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

Professional Playing Career

Eddie Johnson played for many teams during his career. These included the Kings, Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, and Houston Rockets. He also played for the Greek team Olympiacos from 1994 to 1995. He retired from basketball in 1999.

He scored 19,202 points in 1,199 NBA games. This was a very high total when he retired. Even with all those points, he was never picked for an NBA All-Star game. His biggest award was in 1989 when he won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award while playing for the Suns. This award goes to the best player who usually comes off the bench.

Playing in Europe

Eddie Johnson played one year in the Greek Basket League for Olympiacos Piraeus during the 1994–95 season. He became a fan favorite because of his amazing three-point shooting.

One game made him a legend for the club's fans. He scored four three-pointers in the last few minutes of a tough semi-final game. This game was against Panathinaikos Athens, their biggest rivals. Olympiacos won that game 58–52. They then played in the final but lost to Real Madrid Teka. In the EuroLeague, Eddie averaged 21.9 points per game.

Eddie did win a championship in the Greek Basket League. He helped Olympiacos win the 1995 Greek playoff finals against Panathinaikos. Olympiacos won the final game 45–44, which was a very close and exciting match. In the Greek Basket League, he averaged 21.2 points per game.

Return to the NBA

After his year overseas, Eddie Johnson came back to the NBA. He started the 1995–96 season with the Indiana Pacers. Later, he joined the Houston Rockets and played for them for two more seasons.

Besides his Sixth Man of the Year Award, he is also remembered for a game-winning shot. He hit a three-pointer as time ran out in a 95–92 Rockets win. This happened against the Utah Jazz in game 4 of the 1997 Western Conference Finals. Eddie played one more full season for the Rockets and then three games the next season before retiring.
