Success in Australia

In 1977, Eddie moved to Australia and joined Sydney City. This was for the very first season of Australia's National Soccer League. He helped Sydney City win two NSL championships as a player. The first win was in 1977, and the second was in 1980, when he was both a player and a coach. During his time at Hearts, he also played for the Scottish Under-23 team.

Eddie Thomson's Coaching Career

After his playing days, Eddie immediately became the full-time coach for Sydney City. He led them to win two more national championships in 1981 and 1982. He also won an NSL Cup trophy with them in 1986.

When Sydney City left the NSL in 1987, Eddie took over as coach of Sydney Olympic. He guided them to the grand final in 1989. He then left early in the next season to become the head coach of the Australian national team.

Coaching the Australian National Team

Eddie's journey with the Australian national team began earlier. He coached the Australia B team in 1984. Then, in 1985, he became the assistant coach for the Socceroos.

Leading the Socceroos

The team came very close to qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. They only lost 1–0 to an Argentine team that had brought back football legend Diego Maradona.

Olympic Football Success

At the same time, Eddie also coached the Australian Olympic football team. In 1992, his team beat the Netherlands in a memorable match to qualify for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The team almost reached the gold medal match, but they lost to Poland. They then lost to Ghana in the match for the bronze medal.
