Edgar McCoubrey's Early Life

Edgar McCoubrey was born in a place called St. John's, in Newfoundland, Canada. When he was about 16 years old, in 1920, he moved to the United States. He later became an American citizen in 1940.

His Career in Cars

McCoubrey started working with cars in 1926. He worked for a company called GMAC, which helps people get loans for cars. In 1936, Edgar and his wife, Jean, bought a car dealership in Riverside, California. They sold popular car brands like Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and GMC.

Later, in 1938, they opened another car dealership in Palm Springs, California. This one was called Plaza Motors. They sold the same types of cars there.

The Famous Elvis Story

One day, the famous singer Elvis Presley visited Plaza Motors. He wanted a black Cadillac right away! Elvis was dressed in his cool, all-black style. This included a black silk shirt, a black leather jacket, and black sunglasses.

McCoubrey explained that they didn't keep black cars in stock. This was because of the hot desert climate. They could order one for Elvis, but he didn't want to wait. So, Elvis left without a car that day.
