Edgar Marcel Longuet (born August 18, 1879 – died December 12, 1950) was a French doctor and a political activist. He was also the grandson of the famous thinker, Karl Marx.
Edgar Longuet's Life Story
Edgar Longuet was born in Ramsgate, a town in the United Kingdom. His father was Charles Longuet and his mother was Jenny Caroline Marx. Jenny was the daughter of Karl Marx. When Edgar was a baby, he was given the nickname "Wolf" because he loved to eat!
When Edgar was about 18 months old, his family moved to France. France became his home for the rest of his life.
His Political Journey
Edgar became very involved in the workers' rights movement in France. This movement worked to improve conditions for people who worked in factories and other jobs. In 1905, he joined the Socialist Party. This party believed that society should be more equal and that the government should help workers. He supported a leader named Jules Guesde.
Later, in 1937, he left the Socialist Party. In 1938, he joined the French Communist Party. This party also believed in equality but had different ideas about how to achieve it. Edgar was an active member of this party. He strongly admired the ideas of the Soviet Union at that time.
In 1948, Edgar Longuet gave an old photograph, called a daguerreotype, to an important historical institute in Moscow. This photo showed his grandfather Karl Marx with his daughters Jenny (Edgar's mother), Eleanor, and Laura. It also showed a family friend, Friedrich Engels. In the same year, Edgar celebrated the 100th anniversary of The Communist Manifesto. This was a very famous book written by his grandfather Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He celebrated this event in the Soviet Union and in People's Republic of Poland.
His Work as a Doctor
Edgar Longuet lived in Alfortville, a town near Paris. He worked as a doctor for many years. He continued to help people as a doctor almost until he passed away in 1950.
Edgar Longuet had two sons. One was Frédéric Longuet, who became a painter. The other was Paul Longuet, who became a politician. Edgar's brother, Jean, was also a political activist and a member of the French parliament.
