History of Edgerton
Edgerton was started in 1870. This happened when a railroad line was built to that spot. The city was named after the chief engineer of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
In 2010, a big train company, BNSF Railway, announced a new plan. They wanted to build a huge shipping center in Edgerton. This center would cost $250 million and cover 443 acres. It would replace an older facility in Kansas City.
Next to the train center, a large industrial park was planned. This park would have over 7 million square feet of warehouse space. It would be built over 10 years. The train facility officially opened in October 2013. When fully built, it can handle 1.5 million shipping containers each year.
