Edinburg (sometimes spelled Edinburgh) is a small community in Grundy County, Missouri, United States. It is an "unincorporated community," meaning it does not have its own local government. It is also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which is an area defined by the government for counting people during a census. As of the 2020 census, 84 people lived in Edinburg. It is located about 5 miles (8 km) west of Trenton.

History

Early Days and Names

Edinburg was the first settlement in Grundy County. In 1838, it was called "Buck Snort." This was when William Preston Thompson, the first white settler in Grundy County, built his home there. The Thompson Branch of the Grand River is named after him. You can find one of Thompson's homes in nearby Crowder State Park.

Post Office and Name Change

A post office opened in Edinburg in 1857. It stayed open until 1907. The community was named after the famous Scottish city of Edinburgh.

Grand River College

Edinburg was once home to Grand River College. This college operated in Edinburg from 1850 until 1892. After that, it moved to Gallatin, Missouri. There, it was part of William Jewell College for a while. The college finally closed in 1910 after a fire.

Famous Birthplace

Edinburg is also the birthplace of Major General Enoch Crowder. He was an important person in the United States Army. General Crowder founded the United States Selective Service during World War I. The Selective Service is a system that helps the government call people to serve in the military if needed.
