Edisto Beach State Park is a beautiful park located on the coast of South Carolina. It's about 50 miles south of the city of Charleston. You can find it near the small town of Edisto Beach in Colleton County.
This park is special because it has the longest system of trails in South Carolina that are easy for everyone to use, including people with disabilities. These trails go through the amazing maritime forest on Edisto Island. As you explore, you might discover cool historical spots. One such spot is an ancient Native American shell midden. This is a pile of shells left behind by people who lived there around 2000 BC! Another interesting marker is a survey monument placed by Alexander Bache way back in 1850.
There are lots of fun things to do at Edisto Beach State Park. You can try surf fishing right from the beach. People often catch fish like flounder and whiting here. If you love being on the water, you can go boating. It's also a fantastic place for birdwatching, where you can spot many different kinds of birds. And, of course, it's perfect for a relaxing picnic with family and friends.
The park also has a special place called the Edisto Interpretive Center. This center is all about learning! It offers programs and helps with research. Inside, you'll find interactive displays that teach visitors about the ACE Basin estuarine reserve. An estuary is where a river meets the sea, creating a unique environment.
Park History
Edisto Beach State Park has a rich history. It was one of the very first state parks created in South Carolina. The park was developed by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that put young men to work building parks and other public projects.
The land for the park was given as a gift in 1935 by the Edisto Company. Many of the original buildings that the CCC workers built are still standing today. They are still used by visitors, showing how well they were made!
