History of the Group
Early Years (1953-1997)
The company was started in Paris in 1953 by Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild. It was first called La Compagnie Financière (LCF) Edmond de Rothschild. In 1965, a private banking branch opened in Geneva. Another branch opened in Luxembourg three years later.
In 1969, LCF Edmond de Rothschild introduced a new way to invest called "fund of funds" (FOF). This means investing in many different funds at once. The company bought the Bank of California in 1973 and later sold it for a good profit. Also in 1973, Edmond de Rothschild bought the Château Clarke vineyard. This was the start of the Edmond de Rothschild Heritage collection of wines.
In 1989, Benjamin de Rothschild, Edmond's son, created a company to help manage financial risks. By 1992, LCF Edmond de Rothschild managed $2 billion and opened an office in Hong Kong.

In 2008, LCF Edmond de Rothschild became the first foreign bank to own a share of a Chinese fund manager. Between 2000 and 2010, the company opened seven new offices in France.
In 2009, Ariane de Rothschild became the vice-president. In 2010, the company changed its name to Edmond de Rothschild Group. The group joined the United Nations Global Compact in 2011, showing its commitment to good business practices. They also opened an office in Dubai to grow in the Middle East.
In 2015, Ariane de Rothschild became the CEO of the group. She was the first woman to lead a Rothschild financial company. The group also published its first report on how it helps the environment and society. In 2019, the company became fully private, meaning its shares were no longer traded on the stock market. Ariane de Rothschild became the chairperson of the board.
