Family Background
Ariane Langner was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. Her father was a top manager at a big medicine company called Hoechst. Before she turned eighteen, Ariane lived with her parents in different countries like Bangladesh, Colombia, and what was then called Zaire (now the DRC).
In January 1999, she married Benjamin de Rothschild. He was the son of Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild and was set to inherit the Edmond de Rothschild Group. They had four daughters. Her husband, Benjamin de Rothschild, died on January 15, 2021, from a heart attack at his home in Pregny-Chambésy, Switzerland. Ariane de Rothschild is not Jewish and did not change her religion to Judaism.
Education
Ariane de Rothschild went to a French high school in Zaire. She also studied at Sciences Po in Paris. Later, she earned a special business degree (an MBA) in financial management from Pace University in New York. She studied there from 1988 to 1990.
Her Career
While she was studying at Pace University, Ariane Langner worked as a broker at Société Générale in New York City. A broker helps people buy and sell stocks or other investments. After she finished her studies in 1990, she joined AIG in New York. Later that same year, she moved to AIG's trading office in Paris. She met Benjamin de Rothschild, who was a client of AIG, in 1993.
After marrying Benjamin de Rothschild in 1999, Ariane de Rothschild joined the family business, which was then called La Compagnie Financière Edmond de Rothschild (LCF). She started by managing the group's luxury businesses, like wineries, farms, hotels, and restaurants. In 2005, she changed how the group handled its charity work. She wanted to create a way for charity to have a lasting positive effect. This led to the creation of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations. These foundations work in five main areas: art and culture, health and research, helping others (philanthropy), talking between different cultures, and starting businesses that help society.
In 2006, she joined the group's supervisory board, which helps oversee the company. In 2008, she became a board member, and in 2009, she became the vice-president. She focused on investments that help the environment and society. She also worked on organizing the company's many different parts. In 2010, LCF Edmond de Rothschild changed its name to the Edmond de Rothschild Group. By 2014, all of the group's money-related and non-money-related businesses were brought together under one main group structure. In 2015, the group released its first report about how it was being sustainable.
On January 30, 2015, Ariane de Rothschild became the president of the executive committee. This meant she was in charge of the group's daily operations. She was chosen to bring new energy to the company. She brought new ideas and a fresh style of leadership to the bank.
In 2016, she finished organizing the group's luxury businesses under a new name, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage. She also decided to pull the Edmond de Rothschild Group out of Asia. The next year, in 2017, she started using the Avaloq banking technology. In March 2019, the company made Edmond de Rothschild (Switzerland) S.A. fully owned by the group, meaning it was no longer publicly traded. Ariane de Rothschild became the chairman of the board. The French part of the business was combined with the Swiss company to make the group's structure simpler. In January 2021, her husband Benjamin de Rothschild passed away. This meant she gained more control over the Edmond de Rothschild Group through her four daughters' votes. In March 2023, she became the CEO of the group.
