Family Rothschild

Ariane de Rothschild, born Ariane Langner on November 14, 1965, is a French banker. She is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Edmond de Rothschild Group since March 2023. She is the first woman and the first person not born into the Rothschild family to lead one of their financial companies.

She was married to Benjamin de Rothschild from January 1999 until he passed away in January 2021. They had four daughters together. In 2024, her family's wealth was estimated to be around 5 billion euros.

About Ariane de Rothschild

Her Early Life and Family

Ariane Langner was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. Her father worked as a senior manager for a large international medicine company called Hoechst. Because of her father's job, Ariane lived in many different countries while growing up. Before she turned eighteen, she lived with her parents in places like Bangladesh, Colombia, and the country that used to be called Zaire (now the DRC).

In January 1999, she married Benjamin de Rothschild. He was the son of Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild and was set to inherit the Edmond de Rothschild Group. Ariane and Benjamin had four daughters. Benjamin de Rothschild passed away on January 15, 2021, at his home in Pregny-Chambésy, Switzerland.

Her Education

Ariane Langner went to a French high school in Zaire. She then studied at Sciences Po in Paris, which is a famous university. Later, she earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in financial management from Pace University in New York. She studied there from 1988 to 1990.

Her Career in Banking

Starting in Finance

While she was studying at Pace University, Ariane Langner worked as a broker for a bank called Société Générale in New York City. After finishing her studies in 1990, she joined AIG in New York. Later that same year, she moved to AIG's trading office in Paris. She met Benjamin de Rothschild in 1993, who was a client of AIG at the time.

Joining the Family Business

After marrying Benjamin de Rothschild in 1999, Ariane de Rothschild became involved in the family business. This company was known as La Compagnie Financière Edmond de Rothschild (LCF). She started by managing the group's special assets, like their wineries, farms, hotels, and restaurants.

In 2005, she changed how the group handled its charitable activities. She wanted to create a way for their giving to have a lasting positive impact. This led to the creation of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations. These foundations work in five main areas: art and culture, health and research, helping others (philanthropy), encouraging cultural discussions, and supporting businesses that aim to solve social problems (social entrepreneurship).

Taking on Leadership Roles

In 2006, Ariane de Rothschild joined the supervisory board of LCF Edmond de Rothschild. This board helps oversee the company. In 2008, she became a full board member, and in 2009, she was made vice-president. She focused on investments that help the environment and society. She also worked to organize the company's different parts and smaller businesses. In 2010, LCF Edmond de Rothschild changed its name to the Edmond de Rothschild Group.

By 2014, all of the group's financial and non-financial assets were brought together under one main structure. In 2015, the group released its first report showing how it was working towards being sustainable.

On January 30, 2015, Ariane de Rothschild became the president of the executive committee. This meant she was in charge of the group's daily operations. She was chosen to bring new energy and ideas to the company. She was known for bringing a fresh and bold style of leadership to the banking world.

Leading the Group

In 2016, she finished organizing the group's special assets under a new name, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage. She also decided to pull the Edmond de Rothschild Group out of Asia. The next year, in 2017, she introduced new banking technology called Avaloq.

In March 2019, the company made Edmond de Rothschild (Switzerland) S.A. fully owned by the group, meaning it was no longer traded publicly. Ariane de Rothschild became the chairman of the board. The French part of the business was combined with the Swiss company to make the group's structure simpler.

In January 2021, her husband Benjamin de Rothschild passed away. This meant that she gained majority control over the Edmond de Rothschild Group through her four daughters' votes. In March 2023, she officially became the CEO of the group.

Other Activities and Interests

From 2003 to 2011, the Ariane de Rothschild Art Prize supported new art projects. In 2009, the Ariane de Rothschild Women's Doctoral Program started in Israel. This program gives full financial help and extra educational support to women who are studying for their doctoral degrees. The next year, in 2010, the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship Program began. It aims to encourage understanding between different cultures, especially between Jewish and Muslim communities, through social projects and studies.

In 2012, she had a discussion with famous investor Warren Buffett about helping others. This was shown in the first part of a documentary called The Billionaires' Pledge.

In 2018, she led the purchase of a perfume company called Parfums Caron. She helped bring the brand back to life, focusing on selling its products in Middle Eastern countries. After her husband Benjamin de Rothschild passed away in 2021, she took over managing the Gitana Team, which is a sailing team. In 2021, she released the first batch of a rosé wine called L'Amistà, which she helped create.
