Edmund Ho Hau Wah was born on March 13, 1955. He is a well-known politician from Macau. He was the very first Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region. This means he was the top leader of Macau from 1999 to 2009.

Currently, he holds an important position as a Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. This group helps advise the government in China. Edmund Ho was chosen for his first big role as Chief Executive on May 15, 1999. He officially started his job when Macau became a Special Administrative Region on December 20, 1999.

Edmund Ho's Story

Early Life and Family

Edmund Ho was born in Portuguese Macau in 1955. His family came from Guangzhou, a city in Guangdong province. His father, Ho Yin, was a very important leader and businessman in Macau.

Edmund Ho is married and has two children, a son and a daughter. His nephew, Adrian Ho, is also involved in politics in Hong Kong.

His Education Journey

In 1969, after finishing primary school, Edmund Ho moved to Canada to continue his studies. He attended York University and graduated in 1978. He earned a degree in Business Administration.

Later, in 1981, he became a chartered accountant and a certified auditor. This means he was qualified to check and manage financial records for businesses. He worked in accounting firms in India and the United States before returning to Macau.

Business Career

Edmund Ho came back to Macau in 1983. He started a career in both business and community service. He had many different business interests. These included banking, insurance, and public transportation.

He also worked in media, technology, and land development. He held important roles at Tai Fung Bank and Transmac, a public transport company. He was also involved with Macau International Airport and Air Macau.

Political Career

Edmund Ho's political journey began in 1986. He became a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). This is a key advisory body in China. Two years later, he was elected to the National People's Congress (NPC). The NPC is China's highest state power body.

From 1988 to 1999, he served as the Vice-President of the Legislative Council of Macau. This council is like Macau's local parliament. He also played a big part in preparing for Macau to return to China. This happened after the agreement between China and Portugal.

He helped draft the Basic Law of the Macau Special Administrative Region. This law acts like Macau's mini-constitution. He also led many other important groups. These included banking, education, charity, and sports organizations. He was Chairman of the Macau Association of Banks. He also served on the boards of the University of Macau and Jinan University.

Becoming Chief Executive

Edmund Ho was chosen to be the first Chief Executive of Macau in 1999. He was elected by a special committee. He officially took office on December 20, 1999. He served two terms, ending on December 20, 2009.

In 2004, he was re-elected for his second term. He received a very high number of votes. His leadership helped guide Macau during its first ten years as a Special Administrative Region.
