Edmund Ho Hau Wah (born March 13, 1955) is an important politician from Macau. He was the very first Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region. He served in this top role from 1999 to 2009.

Currently, he is a Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. This is a high-level advisory body in China. Edmund Ho was chosen as the Chief Executive-elect on May 15, 1999. He officially became Chief Executive on December 20, 1999. This was the day Macau became a Special Administrative Region of China.

About Edmund Ho

Edmund Ho was born in Macau on March 13, 1955. His family came from Guangzhou, China. His father, Ho Yin, was a well-known leader and businessman in Macau. Edmund Ho is married and has two children. His nephew, Adrian Ho, is also involved in politics in Hong Kong.

His Education Journey

In 1969, Edmund Ho moved to Canada to study. He earned a degree in Business Administration from York University in 1978. He then became a qualified accountant and auditor in 1981. After working in accounting firms in India and the United States, he returned to Macau.

Starting a Business Career

Edmund Ho began his business and political career in Macau in 1983. He was involved in many different businesses. These included accounting, banking, insurance, and public transport. He also worked in media, technology, and land development.

He held important positions in many companies. For example, he was an executive director at Tai Fung Bank. He was also chairman of Transmac, a public transport company. He helped lead the Macau International Airport Company and Air Macau.

Edmund Ho's Political Roles

Edmund Ho's political journey started in 1986. He became a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). This group advises the Chinese government. Two years later, he was elected to the National People's Congress (NPC). This is China's highest state power body. He served on the Standing Committee of both the eighth and ninth NPCs.

He also joined the local government in Macau in 1988. He was the Vice-President of the Legislative Council of Macau for 11 years. This council makes laws for Macau.

Preparing for Macau's Return to China

Edmund Ho played a big part in Macau's return to China. This happened after the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration was signed. He helped write the Basic Law for Macau. This law acts like Macau's mini-constitution. He was also involved in the committee that prepared for Macau to become a Special Administrative Region.

Over the years, Edmund Ho led many different organizations. These included groups in banking, education, and sports. He was chairman of the Macau Association of Banks. He also served as Vice-President of the Macau Chamber of Commerce. He was involved with the University of Macau and the Macau Olympic Committee.
