Portuguese Governador de Macau

The Governor of Macau (in Portuguese: Governador de Macau; in Chinese: 澳門總督) was the main leader of Portuguese Macau. Macau was a colony of Portugal for many years. Before 1623, this leader was called the captain-major.

The role of Governor ended on December 20, 1999. This was when Macau was returned to China. After that, the new leader of Macau became the Chief Executive of Macau.

What did the Governor of Macau do?

The Governor of Macau was in charge of running the colony's daily life. This included local laws and how things worked inside Macau.

However, bigger decisions like dealing with other countries or military matters were handled by the Portuguese government. This government was located far away in Lisbon, Portugal.

Leaders of Macau (1557–1999)

Macau had many leaders over the centuries. First, they were called "captains-major," and later, "governors." These leaders were appointed by Portugal to manage the colony.

Early Captains-Major

The first leaders of Macau were known as captains-major. They started leading around 1557. Here are a few of the earliest ones:

Captains-major Time in office
Francisco Martins 1557–1558
Leonel de Sousa 1558–1559
Rui Barreto 1559–1560

Many other captains-major followed, leading Macau for short periods.

Governors of Macau

In 1623, the title changed to "Governor." The first official Governor was Francisco Mascarenhas. He took office on July 7, 1623.

Over the years, many people served as Governor. They helped shape Macau's history and development. The last Governor of Macau was Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira. He served from April 23, 1991, until December 19, 1999. His time in office ended just before Macau was handed over to China.
