Ednaswap was an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. They were active from 1993 to 1998. During these five years, the band released four main albums with big record labels like East West, Elektra Records, and Island Records.
The band is most famous for their song "Torn". This song was written by band members Scott Cutler and Anne Preven, along with English musician Phil Thornalley. It was first recorded by a Danish artist named Lis Sørensen. Later, "Torn" appeared on Ednaswap's first album. Many artists have covered this song since then. Some famous names include Natalie Imbruglia, One Direction, and Phoebe Bridgers.
History of Ednaswap
In 1993, two songwriters, Scott Cutler and Anne Preven, decided to start a new band. They invited Rusty Anderson and Paul Bushnell to join them. Anne Preven, who was the lead singer, came up with the band's unique name, Ednaswap. She said the name came from a dream where her band with that name was so bad they got booed off stage!
Soon after making a simple acoustic demo, the band signed a contract with the EastWest label. Ednaswap's first album, also called Ednaswap, came out in 1995. This was their only record with EastWest. The album was not widely released to everyone. Because of this, EastWest let them go from their contract. The band then signed with Island Records shortly after. For a short time, they even called themselves Edna Swap instead of Ednaswap.
In 1997, Ednaswap released Wacko Magneto. This was their first full album that was widely available. It included the song "Torn". Later, Natalie Imbruglia covered "Torn". Her version became a huge hit! It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was also number one on radio stations around the world. The song stayed at number one on the Billboard Airplay chart for 14 weeks. Over a million copies of Imbruglia's single were sold in the United Kingdom alone. However, even with this big success, Natalie Imbruglia's version of "Torn" did not bring much fame to Ednaswap themselves. The band eventually broke up on April 12, 1999.
Like many bands, Ednaswap's music style changed with almost every album. Their first album sounded like Post-grunge music. But their albums Chicken and Wacko Magneto were more like Hard rock. They had a sound similar to bands like Veruca Salt and Hole. One reviewer even described Wacko as a mix of Sex Pistols, Mick Ronson, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix! Their last album, Wonderland Park, changed their sound again. It was a very melodic Pop rock album. It still had some harder parts than most pop music. Before they broke up, the band thought they might go back to the harder sound of Wacko Magneto. Even though no new songs were recorded, the later work of some members showed an even more polished pop sound.
