Natalie Jane Imbruglia (born 4 February 1975) is a talented Australian and British singer and actress.
She grew up in New South Wales, Australia. Natalie became famous in the early 1990s for playing Beth Brennan in the TV show Neighbours. After leaving the show, she moved to the UK to start her music career.
Her first song, "Torn", came out in 1997. It quickly became a huge hit around the world. It was even named one of the 50 best songs of the 1990s by Rolling Stone. Her first album, Left of the Middle (1997), sold seven million copies worldwide. It earned many awards in the US, UK, and Australia.
Natalie has released six studio albums and sold over ten million records. She has won many awards, including eight ARIA Awards and two Brit Awards. She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Besides music, Natalie has acted in films like Johnny English (2003). She has also modeled for big brands like L'Oreal and Gap. Natalie also helps with charity work, supporting groups like Virgin Unite. She works to raise awareness about health issues.

Early Life and Career Beginnings
Growing Up in Australia
Natalie Imbruglia was born in Sydney, Australia, on 4 February 1975. She is the second of four daughters. Her father's family came from Italy. Her mother's family has Irish, Scottish, and English roots. One of her ancestors arrived in Australia as a convict with the First Fleet.
Natalie grew up in Berkeley Vale, New South Wales. She went to Mater Dei College. When she was fifteen, her family moved to Sydney. There, she studied different types of dancing, including ballet and tap.
Starting Her Acting Career
Natalie appeared in TV commercials for Coca-Cola and the Australian snack Twisties. She left school at sixteen to become an actress. She got a role as Beth Brennan in the Australian TV show Neighbours. She lived with Benjamin Mitchell, another actor from the show.
After two years, she left Neighbours and moved to London in 1994. She met Anne Barret, who became her manager. Anne encouraged her to record some demo songs. Natalie then signed a record deal with BMG. This happened after her demo of "Torn" impressed RCA Records.
Music Success and Albums
"Torn" and Left of the Middle
Natalie Imbruglia's first international song, "Torn", was a cover. The first English version was by an American band called Ednaswap. The song was originally Danish. "Torn" was released in the UK on 27 October 1997. It quickly reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. It sold over one million copies in the UK. This made it one of the best-selling songs of the 1990s there.
The song became very popular worldwide. In the United States, a radio station in Los Angeles started playing it in January 1998. Other stations and MTV soon followed. Natalie even performed on Saturday Night Live before her album was out. "Torn" became number one on the Billboard Radio Songs Chart for eleven weeks.
Natalie's first album, Left of the Middle, came out on 24 November 1997. It sold 350,000 copies in the UK in just three weeks. The album has sold 7 million copies globally. Other songs from the album, like "Big Mistake" and "Wishing I Was There", also did well.
The success of "Torn" and Left of the Middle brought Natalie many awards. These included an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. She also won six ARIA Music Awards in 1998. These included Best New Talent and Single of the Year. She also won two Brit Awards for Best International Newcomer and Best International Female.
White Lilies Island and Counting Down the Days
Natalie's next album, White Lilies Island, was released in 2001. She co-wrote every song on this album. The first song, "That Day", was different from her previous hits. It did not reach the UK Top 10. The album sold 1 million copies but did not match the huge success of Left of the Middle.

Her third album, Counting Down the Days, came out in April 2005. Its first song, "Shiver", became her longest-charting song in the UK since "Torn". It was the most-played song of 2005. Counting Down The Days became her first album to reach number one on the album charts.
Natalie went on a small European tour in late 2005. It was her first tour since Left of the Middle. Many concerts sold out, especially in London. The album was the 100th best-selling album in the UK in 2005.
In 2007, her record company released a collection of her songs called The Singles Collection. It included a new song, "Glorious". The album reached number 5 in the UK. It sold 600,000 copies.
Come to Life and Acting Focus

In 2009, Natalie released her album Come to Life. She worked with artists like Chris Martin from Coldplay on some songs. The album was released in Australia on 2 October 2009. It did not perform as well as her previous albums. Plans to release it in the UK and US were later canceled.
After Come to Life, Natalie took a break from music for six years. She focused more on acting. She moved to Los Angeles and appeared in three movies. These included Closed for Winter (2009), Underdogs (2013), and Among Ravens (2014). In April 2014, Natalie also made her stage debut in a play called Things We Do For Love in the UK.
Male and Firebird
On 3 December 2014, Natalie signed a new record deal. She planned to release an album of cover songs by male artists. The first song was "Instant Crush", originally by Daft Punk. Her fifth album, Male, was released on 31 July 2015. She toured Europe and the UK in 2017 and 2018 to support the album.
In 2019, Natalie signed with BMG, her original record label. She planned to release new music. Her sixth studio album, Firebird, was released on 24 September 2021. The first song from the album was "Build It Better".
In 2022, Natalie won the third series of the British version of The Masked Singer. She performed as "Panda". She released her version of "Story of My Life" after winning. On 28 July 2022, Natalie made a special appearance as Beth in the very last episode of Neighbours.
In February 2024, it was announced that Natalie would tour the UK and Ireland with the Irish group the Corrs. Later in 2024, Natalie also competed in the American version of The Masked Singer as "Bluebell".

TV Judge and Documentaries
In May 2010, Natalie became a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor. She mentored the Girls category. Her final act, Sally Chatfield, was the runner-up. She also appeared as a guest judge on the original British version of The X Factor in June 2010.
In 2016, Natalie was part of the SBS TV series First Contact. In 2024, she released an Audible podcast called Sleep Sound with Natalie Imbruglia. In it, she reads poetry by an Australian poet.
Personal Life
Family and Relationships
Natalie Imbruglia has a younger sister, Laura Imbruglia, who is also a singer-songwriter. While on Neighbours, Natalie briefly dated her co-star Stefan Dennis. In the late 1990s, she dated American actor David Schwimmer.
In 1999, Natalie met Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns in London. They started dating and got engaged in 2002. They married on New Year's Eve 2003 in Port Douglas, Queensland. Daniel wrote a song called "Satisfied" for Natalie's 2005 album. Natalie wrote her 2005 song "Counting Down the Days" about their long-distance relationship. They decided to go their separate ways in 2008.
Natalie became a British citizen in 2013. On 9 October 2019, Natalie announced that she had welcomed a baby boy.
Helping Others
Natalie Imbruglia is an ambassador for Virgin Unite. This group works to end poverty and raise awareness about health issues like obstetric fistula.
She appeared in a comedy sketch for Amnesty International in 2006. Natalie has also spoken openly about clinical depression to help others understand the condition. In 2008, she supported the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign. This campaign helps raise money for breast cancer research.
