Eduardo Sáenz de Buruaga y Polanco (born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1893 – died in Madrid on February 17, 1964) was an important Spanish military officer. He was part of the Army of Africa and won many military awards. During the Spanish Civil War, Colonel Sáenz de Buruaga supported General Franco. He led parts of the Nationalist Army in major battles. These included the Corunna Road, Jarama, and Teruel.
Early Military Career
Eduardo Sáenz de Buruaga began his military journey in 1910. He joined the Toledo Infantry Academy. There, he learned from Colonel José Villalba Riquelme. This academy helped train many future Spanish military leaders.
Role in the Spanish Civil War
When General Franco started an uprising in July 1936, Sáenz de Buruaga quickly joined him. Colonel Sáenz de Buruaga and Colonel Asensio led their troops to take control of Tetuán. Tetuán was an important city in Spanish Morocco. They secured the city for the military rebels.
During the Spanish Civil War, Sáenz de Buruaga played a key role. He was involved in several major battles. His leadership helped the Nationalist Army in these important fights. Later, during the Battle of the Ebro, Franco made him a full general.
After the War
After the Spanish Civil War ended, Sáenz de Buruaga continued his service. He held several important positions. He became the Captain General of Seville. He also served as Captain General of the Balearic Islands.
He was also appointed Governor of Madrid. Another role he held was Governor of the Campo de Gibraltar area. These roles showed his continued importance in Spain's government and military.
