Edward Alexander Millar (born June 25, 1860 – died January 31, 1934) was an important officer in the United States Army. He served in two major conflicts: the Spanish–American War and World War I. He rose to the rank of brigadier general. He is best known for leading the 5th and 58th Field Artillery Brigades during World War I.

Edward Millar's Early Life

Edward Alexander Millar was born in Louisville, Kentucky. This happened on June 25, 1860. In 1882, he finished his studies at the United States Military Academy (USMA). He was a good student, graduating 14th in his class. After graduating, he joined the 3rd Artillery Regiment. He also went on to graduate from the Artillery School in 1886.

Edward Millar's Military Career

From 1891 to 1896, Millar worked as an assistant instructor. He taught engineering and artillery at the Artillery School. This school was located at Fort Monroe, Virginia. In 1909, he completed his studies at the United States Army War College. This is a special school for high-ranking officers.

Millar helped General Edward B. Williston. He then served during the Spanish–American War. This war included fighting in the Philippine Insurrection. On December 1, 1911, Millar was promoted to Colonel of Field Artillery. He then moved to the 6th Field Artillery on June 13, 1913.

Millar became a brigadier general in the National Army. This promotion happened on December 17, 1917. As a brigadier general, he led the 5th Field Artillery Brigade. This brigade was part of the 5th Division. During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, he also temporarily led the 58th Field Artillery Brigade. This was a very large battle in World War I.

In 1920, Millar retired from the Army. He had some physical disabilities. At that time, he held the rank of colonel in the regular Army. He was also a brigadier general in the National Army. In 1930, a new law was passed by Congress. This law allowed World War I generals to retire at their highest rank. Because of this, he was promoted to brigadier general on the retired list.

Edward Millar's Personal Life

Edward Alexander Millar passed away on January 31, 1934. He died in Coronado, California. He was buried at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.
