Edward Hardwicke (born August 7, 1932 – died May 16, 2011) was an English actor. He was well-known for playing Doctor Watson. This was in The Return of Sherlock Holmes TV series.

Early Life and Acting Start

Edward Hardwicke was born in London, England. His parents, Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Helena Pickard, were also actors.

He began acting in movies when he was just 10 years old. This was in Hollywood. His first film was A Guy Named Joe, where he acted with Spencer Tracy.

After this, he moved back to England. He went to Stowe School. He also served in the Royal Air Force. Later, he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Theatre Work

Edward Hardwicke acted in many plays. He performed at famous theatres like the Bristol Old Vic. He also worked at The Oxford Playhouse and the Nottingham Playhouse.

In 1964, he joined the National Theatre. He stayed there for seven years. He acted in plays by famous writers. These included William Shakespeare's Othello. He also appeared in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Later, in 2001, he acted in The Winslow Boy. This play was at the Chichester Festival Theatre. His own father had played the same role in the movie version in 1948.

TV Roles and Doctor Watson

Hardwicke started acting on television in the 1970s. He played Pat Grant in the show Colditz. He also appeared in the comedy show My Old Man.

His most famous role was Doctor Watson. This was in the TV series The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Another actor, David Burke, played Watson first. But he asked Hardwicke to take over the part.

Edward Hardwicke played Watson for eight years. He was in the show from 1986 to 1994. His version of Watson was often seen as calm. In 1989, he also played Watson on stage. This was in a play called The Secret of Sherlock Holmes.

Movie Appearances

Edward Hardwicke was in many movies. Some of these include The Day of the Jackal (1973). He was also in Richard III (1995).

Other films he appeared in were Shadowlands (1993) and Elizabeth (1998). He also had roles in Love Actually (2003) and Oliver Twist (2005).

Besides acting, he also narrated some movies. This means he was the voice telling the story.

Family Life and Death

Edward Hardwicke was married twice. His first wife was Anne Iddon. They had two daughters named Kate and Emma. They later divorced.

In 1995, he married Prim Cotton. Hardwicke lived in Chichester, England. He passed away on May 16, 2011, from cancer.
