Howard Edwin "Ed" Reinecke (January 7, 1924 – December 24, 2016) was an American politician from California. He served three terms in the United States House of Representatives. He was the 39th state lieutenant governor from 1969 until he left office in 1974 due to a legal issue.
Early Life and Education
Reinecke was born in Medford, Oregon. He finished high school at Beverly Hills High School in 1942. During World War II, he served in the Navy. He worked as a radioman, sending and receiving messages.
After the war, he went to the California Institute of Technology. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Later, he started a manufacturing company called FEBCO. He founded it with his sister and two brothers in southern California.
Political Career Highlights
Reinecke served in the United States House of Representatives from 1965 to 1969. This meant he was a lawmaker for California in the U.S. government. As part of the Interior Committee, he worked to protect rivers in the Western U.S. This included the Colorado River.
In 1969, the Lieutenant Governor of California, Robert Finch, left his job. President Richard Nixon chose Finch for a new role in Washington D.C. To fill the open spot, Governor Ronald Reagan appointed Ed Reinecke. Reinecke became the Lieutenant Governor on January 9, 1969. He was re-elected to this position in 1970.
In 1974, Reinecke decided to run for Governor of California. Governor Reagan chose not to run for a third term. Reinecke was a strong candidate from the conservative part of the Republican Party. However, a legal investigation began during his campaign. This issue affected his chances in the election. He was defeated in the primary election.
Later Life and Interests
Ed Reinecke and his wife, Jean Hrabec Mietus, owned a ranch in Placerville. It was called the Diamond R Ranch. They were the first ranchers in El Dorado County to raise a special type of cattle called Charolais cattle.
In 1981, they opened a restaurant named "Zachary Jacques." It was known for its prime rib and live music. They also ran a business called Reinecke Realty Residential. This company helped people buy and sell homes.
