Edwin Warren Moïse (1810–1868) was an important American figure who had many different jobs! He was a doctor, a lawyer, and even held high positions in the government of Louisiana. He served as the Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives, the Attorney General of Louisiana, and a District Court Judge.

Early Life and Education

Edwin Warren Moïse was born on January 2, 1810. This was in Charleston, South Carolina. His father was Hyam Moïse, who was from Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). His mother was Cecelia Francis (Woolf) Moïse.

Edwin grew up in Charleston. His family attended a place of worship called Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. He studied to become a doctor. He went to the Charleston Medical College.

Career and Public Service

Moïse first worked as a doctor. He practiced medicine in Woodville, Mississippi. This town was wealthy because of its cotton farms.

In 1840, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. There, he decided to become a lawyer. He was very successful in his new career.

He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. He even became the Speaker of the House. This means he led the meetings of the state's lawmakers. Later, he served as a United States Attorney. This job involved representing the U.S. government in legal matters.

From 1856 to 1860, he served as the Attorney General of Louisiana. He held this important legal position under Governor Robert C. Wickliffe.

During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Moïse continued his public service. He worked as a District Court Judge for Louisiana. He supported the Southern states' decision to leave the United States. He also agreed with the ideas of John C. Calhoun.

Family Life

Edwin Warren Moïse was married two times. His first wife was Priscilla (Lopez) Moïse. They had two daughters and one son:

  • Cecilia Woodville Moïse (1836–1921).
  • Theodore Lopez Moïse (1839–1839). Sadly, he passed away just a few days after he was born.
  • Sallie Lopez Moïse (1839–1924). Her mother passed away shortly after Sallie was born.

His second wife was Louise (Hubert) Moïse. She was the daughter of William de St. Hubert and Rose Emilie (De La Chenaye) Hubert. Louise's grandfather owned a large sugar farm in Saint-Domingue. Edwin and Louise had four sons and one daughter:

  • Louise Moïse (1854–1856).
  • Marie Aline Moïse Conrad (1857–1906). She married George Mather Conrad. They had six children together.
  • Harry Moïse (1861–1912). He married Josephine Julia (Hereford). They had four children.
  • Theodore Sidney Moïse (1862–1915). He married Mary Louise (Gaston) Moïse. Her father, Dr. John Brown Gaston, was once the Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama. Theodore worked as a Superintendent for the Georgia Central Railway. They had five children.
  • Warren Hubert Moïse (1864–1939). He married Laura Mason. Warren worked as a stock broker in San Francisco, California.

Death

Edwin Warren Moïse passed away on June 29, 1868. He died in Jefferson, Louisiana. He was buried in the Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans.
