About Eemnes
Eemnes used to be two separate villages: Eemnes-Binnen and Eemnes-Buiten. These names helped people know if the village was "inside" or "outside" the main dyke (a wall built to hold back water) of the Eem River.
Eemnes's City Rights
Long ago, in 1345, Eemnes-Buiten was given "city rights." This meant it had special permissions, like being able to build walls or hold markets. Later, in 1439, Eemnes-Binnen also received these rights.
Special Pools in Eemnes
Before 1932, big storms sometimes caused the dykes in this area to break. When this happened, large, deep pools of water called "waaien" or "wielen" would form. These pools could be many meters wide and deep.
Why These Pools Are Important
Landowners often didn't fill these pools because they were so big. Today, these pools are special because they show how people fought against the sea. In 2005, they were even named "geological monuments" by the local government!
