Effner is a small, quiet community that doesn't have its own official government. It's located right on the border between two US states: Illinois and Indiana. Most of Effner is in Iroquois County, Illinois, but a small part of it is in Newton County, Indiana.
A Look Back in Time
Effner started around the year 1860. It was first known by a different name, Haxby. For a short time, from 1899 to 1901, Effner even had its own post office.
Where is Effner?
You can find Effner along two important roads, US Route 52 and US Route 24. It's just east of a town called Sheldon. Most of Effner is in Illinois.
However, some parts of Effner, like its large grain elevators and the old railway station, are actually across the border in Indiana. A train track, used by the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway, also runs through the town. It connects Sheldon to Kentland.
