About St John's Church

Building the Church

The people who designed Eglwys Sant Ioan were architects named Middleton, Prothero & Phillot. They were from a place called Cheltenham.

Laying the First Stone

A special ceremony happened on June 25, 1889. A church leader named A. G. Edwards laid the first stone. This is called the foundation stone. It's like the very first brick laid for a new building.

Who Built It?

The actual building work was done by a person named Thomas Collins. He was from Tewkesbury.

How Much Did It Cost?

At first, they thought the church would cost about £2000 to build. But it ended up costing more, around £3041. The church was officially opened on June 15, 1890. Another church leader, the Bishop of St. Davids, opened it.

A Special Building

On May 19, 1981, Eglwys Sant Ioan was given a special title. It became a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important building because of its history or how it looks. People thought it was "a well-designed late Victorian smaller town church."
