Eglwys Sant Ioan, also known as the Church of St John, is a special church in Carmarthen, Wales. It belongs to the Anglican Christian faith. This church was built between 1889 and 1890. It was created to be the main Welsh language church for the area, serving the larger St Peter's parish. You can find it on Penuel Street in Carmarthen.

Building the Church

Who Designed and Built It?

The church was designed by a team of architects from Cheltenham. Their names were Middleton, Prothero, and Phillot. An important person named A. G. Edwards helped start the building. He was a bishop and used to be a vicar in Carmarthen. He placed the first stone, called the foundation stone, on June 25, 1889.

How Much Did It Cost?

The building work was done by Thomas Collins from Tewkesbury. The builders first thought the church would cost about £2000. But the final cost was more than expected. It ended up costing £3041 to build. The church officially opened its doors on June 15, 1890. The Bishop of St. Davids led the opening ceremony.

Eglwys Sant Ioan is a very important building. On May 19, 1981, it was given a special status. It became a Grade II listed building. This means it is protected because of its history and design. Experts called it "a well-designed late Victorian smaller town church."

Other Protected Parts

Not just the church building is special. The metal railings, gates, and gate piers around the church are also important. They were made in 1893 by a company called T. Jones and Sons. They are also separately listed as Grade II. This means they are protected too, just like the church itself.
