Discover the Eight Northern Pueblos

A pueblo is a type of village or community built by Native American people. The word "pueblo" comes from Spanish and means "village." These eight pueblos have been home to their people for hundreds of years. They are known for their unique traditions and strong community spirit.

Languages of the Pueblos

The people of the Eight Northern Pueblos speak different languages. These languages are part of a larger language family called Tanoan.

  • The people of Taos and Picuris pueblos speak a language called Tiwa.
  • The other six pueblos – Santa Clara, Ohkay Owingeh, San Ildefonso, Nambé, Pojoaque, and Tesuque – speak a language called Tewa.

Even though they are different, Tiwa and Tewa are related languages.

The Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council

To work together and support each other, these eight pueblos formed the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council. This council helps to organize events and protect the rights of the pueblos. It acts as a voice for their shared interests. The main office for this council is in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico. Ohkay Owingeh changed its name back to its original Tewa name in 2005. Before that, it was known as San Juan.
