The Eighteen Mile House is a very old house near Harrison, in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It was built a long time ago, around 1800 to 1815. No one knows the exact year it was built or who built it.

A Historic Home

The Eighteen Mile House was once a busy place. It served as a tavern, which was like an inn or hotel for travelers. People could stop there to rest and eat. For a while, it even had a post office!

Why "Eighteen Mile House"?

The house got its name because it was about 18 miles from the city of Cincinnati. It was built near a special road called a toll road. On a toll road, people paid a small fee to travel.

What Does It Look Like?

The house is made of brick and has a tin roof. It has two and a half stories. Look for its unique pointed gables on the ends. Inside, there are chimneys that rise up from above these gables. There is also a cool two-story porch on the front, facing west. Later, the house was made a bit bigger on its northern side. We don't know exactly when or who did this.

Civil War Stories

The house saw some exciting times during the American Civil War. According to local stories, Abraham Lincoln might have stayed there at least once. Also, a group of soldiers called Morgan's Raiders attacked the property in the middle of 1863.

A Special Landmark

As time passed, the Eighteen Mile House became a special reminder of the past. Because of its unique old architecture and its important place in Ohio's history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it's a protected historic site.
