Eiko Kadono, whose real name is Eiko Watanabe, was born on January 1, 1935. She is a famous Japanese writer who creates books for children. She writes many kinds of books, including picture books, non-fiction stories, and essays.
Her most well-known book is Kiki's Delivery Service. This book came out in 1985. It was later turned into a popular animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki. The story of Kiki also led to many other books in the series. In 2018, Eiko Kadono won the important Hans Christian Andersen Award for her writing. She also works as a guest professor at Nihon Fukushi University in Japan.

Her Early Life and School
Eiko Kadono was born in Tokyo, Japan. When she was a child, World War II was happening. Because of the war, she had to move to northern Japan for safety.
After the war, she went to Waseda University. She studied English literature there and earned her degree. In 1960, when she was 25 years old, she moved to Brazil. She lived there for two years.
Her Writing Career
Eiko Kadono wrote a non-fiction story based on her time in Brazil. It was called Brazil and My Friend Luizinho. This book was about a Brazilian boy who loved to dance samba. Brazil was published in 1970.
Kadono has said that living through World War II greatly influenced her. It made her see the world in a unique way. This experience also sparked her creative and independent spirit.
She has written almost 200 books. Most of these are for children, including picture books and stories for older kids. She has also written collections of essays. Her first successful children's book was The Robber Bla-Bla, published in 1981.
Kiki's Delivery Service
In 1985, she published her famous children's novel, Majo no Takkyūbin, which means Kiki's Delivery Service. This book is about a young witch who is still learning her magic. She starts a delivery service in a lovely seaside town called Koriko.
The book won several awards, including the Noma Prize for Children's Literature. It also received the Shogakukan Children's Publication Culture Award. In 1989, the book was made into an animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. This movie became one of his most popular films. Later, in 2014, a live-action movie of the book was also made. Eiko Kadono has written eight more books that continue Kiki's story or tell about her past.
Awards and Recognition
Eiko Kadono won the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing. This award is one of the highest honors for children's authors. The judges praised her books for being charming and full of kindness. They also admired her strong female characters. These characters are often independent and brave, inspiring young readers.
