Eilidh Doyle (pronounced AY-lee; born Eilidh Child on 20 February 1987) is a retired British track and field athlete. She was known for running the 400 metres hurdles race outdoors. She also competed in the 400 metres flat indoors and the 4 x 400 metres relay race.
Eilidh represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. She also became the 2014 European Champion in the 400 metres hurdles. Eilidh won three silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, 2014, and 2018.
Eilidh Doyle had a long and successful career. She won medals at almost every major international championship. With 17 medals, she retired as the most decorated Scottish track and field athlete ever. She holds the Scottish record for the 400 metres hurdles (54.09 seconds) and the indoor 400 metres (51.45 seconds).

Early Life and Start in Sports
Eilidh Child was born in Perth, Scotland on 20 February 1987. When she was younger, she was a talented swimmer. She won the Scottish Schools butterfly swimming title twice when she was under 13.
Her family also loves sports. One of her sisters competed in triple jump, and her brother is a footballer.
Eilidh's Amazing Sporting Career
Eilidh started to show her talent in the 400 metres hurdles. In 2009, she greatly improved her personal best time. She finished second at the European Under-23 Championships in Lithuania. She also reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Berlin.
2010-2012: Commonwealth and Olympic Debuts
In 2010, Eilidh ran even faster, setting a new personal best. She then won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
By 2012, she ran under 55 seconds for the 400 metres hurdles. This helped her get selected for the London Olympics. At the Olympics, she made it to the semi-finals.
2013-2014: European Champion and Records
Eilidh won two medals at the 2013 European Indoor Championships. She earned a silver medal in the 400 metres, setting a new Scottish indoor record. She then won a gold medal in the 4x400 metres relay with her British teammates.
Outdoors, she broke the Scottish 400 metres hurdles record. At the World Championships in Moscow, she finished fifth in the 400 metres hurdles. She also won a silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay.
In 2014, Eilidh became the captain of the Great Britain team at the World Indoor Championships. There, she won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. She also won her first British title in the 400 metres hurdles.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Eilidh captained the Scottish athletics team. She won another silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles. Just two weeks later, she won a gold medal at the European Championships in Zürich. She was the first British woman in 20 years to win this title.
2016-2018: Olympic Medal and More Success
In 2016, Eilidh started competing under her married name, Doyle. She won a Diamond League meeting in Doha. Later that year, she set a new personal best of 54.09 seconds in Monaco.
At the Rio Olympics, she reached the final of the 400 metres hurdles. She then won a bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. This was the first Scottish Olympic track and field medal since 1988.
In 2017, Eilidh was chosen as the captain for the Great Britain team at the World Championships in London. She won a silver medal in the 4x400 metres relay. This made her the most decorated Scottish athlete in major competitions.
In 2018, Eilidh won a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships. She was also the first female flag bearer for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. She won her third Commonwealth Games silver medal there.
Retirement from Athletics
In August 2019, Eilidh announced she would take a break to have a baby. She planned to return to athletics later.
However, in May 2021, Eilidh Doyle officially announced her retirement. She retired as the most decorated Scottish track and field athlete of all time. She won a total of 17 medals from major championships.
Personal Life
In October 2015, Eilidh Child married Brian Doyle, who was also a 400-metre runner. She then started competing as Eilidh Doyle.
Eilidh has a degree in Physical Education from Edinburgh University. She used to be a full-time PE teacher at Perth Grammar School. She later decided to focus completely on her training.
She is a big fan of Hearts FC, a football club. She even wears a maroon and white wristband during her races to support them!
Awards and Recognitions
Eilidh Doyle has received many awards throughout her career. She was inducted into the University of Edinburgh Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. She also entered the Scottish Women in Sport Hall of Fame in 2023.
She was named Scottish Sportswoman of the Year in 2014. Scottish Athletics also named her Athlete of the Year multiple times.
