Eilidh Doyle (pronounced AY-lee) is a retired British track and field athlete. She was born Eilidh Child on February 20, 1987. Eilidh was a specialist in the 400 metres hurdles race outdoors. She also competed in the 400 metres flat indoors and in the 4 × 400 metres relay race.
Eilidh represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She won an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She became the 2014 European Champion in the 400 metres hurdles. She also won three silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, 2014, and 2018.
Eilidh Doyle had a long and successful career. She was especially good at relay races, winning two European titles. She is one of the few athletes to have won medals at almost every major international championship. With 17 medals from big championships, Eilidh retired as the most decorated Scottish track and field athlete ever.
She also won three World Championship relay medals in 2013, 2015, and 2017. She earned a World Athletics Relays medal in 2015 and two Diamond League podium finishes. Eilidh also won medals at European Team Championships and a Continental Cup medal representing Europe. She won individual medals in the 400 metres at both World and European Indoor championships.
Eilidh reached four major outdoor finals, with her best finish being 5th place at the World Championships. As of December 31, 2022, Eilidh still holds the Scottish record for the 400 metres hurdles with a time of 54.09 seconds (set in 2016). She also holds the indoor 400 metres record with 51.45 seconds (set in 2013). Eilidh was a seven-time British champion and four-time Scottish national champion when she retired.

Early Life and First Steps
Eilidh Child was born in Perth, Scotland on February 20, 1987. When she was younger, she won the Scottish Schools butterfly swimming title twice in the Under 13 age group. Her family is also sporty; one of her sisters used to compete in triple jump, and her brother is a footballer.
Amazing Athletics Career
Starting Strong in Hurdles
In 2009, Eilidh greatly improved her fastest time in the 400 metres hurdles. She went from 56.84 seconds to 55.32 seconds. This helped her finish second at the European Under 23 Championships in Lithuania. She also made it to the semi-finals at the World Championships in Berlin that year. In 2010, she ran even faster, achieving 55.16 seconds at the London Diamond League. Later that year, she won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Olympic and World Stage Success
In 2012, Eilidh ran the 400 metres hurdles in under 55 seconds for the first time, with a time of 54.96 seconds. This helped her get chosen for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. At the Olympics, she reached the semi-finals.
In 2013, she won two medals at the European Indoor Championships in Sweden. She earned a silver medal in the 400 metres, setting a new Scottish indoor record of 51.45 seconds. She then won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay race. The British team also set a new UK indoor record. Outdoors, she broke the Scottish 400 metres hurdles record with 54.22 seconds. At the World Championships in Moscow, she finished fifth in the 400 metres hurdles final. She also won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay.
Captaining Teams and More Wins
Eilidh was chosen to be the captain of the first-ever Scotland team at the Glasgow International match in 2014. She also captained the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Poland, where she won a bronze medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay. In 2014, she won her first British title in the 400 metres hurdles. She also won the first-ever Diamond League meeting held in Scotland.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Eilidh captained the Scottish athletics team. They had their best medal results since 1990. She won another silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles. Two weeks later, at the European Championships in Switzerland, she won a gold medal in the 400 metres hurdles. She was the first British woman to win this European title in 20 years.
In May 2016, Eilidh won the 400 metres hurdles at the Doha Diamond League. This was her first time competing under her married name, Doyle. On July 15, 2016, she won the Diamond League meeting in Monaco, setting a new personal best time of 54.09 seconds. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, she finished eighth in the 400 metres hurdles final. She then won a bronze medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay. This was the first Olympic track and field medal for a Scottish athlete since 1988.
In July 2017, Eilidh was chosen by her teammates to be the captain for the Great Britain team at the World Championships in London. At these championships, she finished eighth in the 400 metres hurdles final. She then went on to win a silver medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay. By winning this silver medal, Eilidh became the most decorated Scottish athlete in Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth competitions.
In 2018, Eilidh started the season well by winning a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham. She achieved her season's best time despite injuring her calf during the final. She and Laura Muir were the first Scottish individual medalists at these championships in 25 years. Eilidh was chosen by her fellow athletes to be the first female flag bearer for Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. She then won her third Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles. In August, Eilidh made her fifth appearance at the European Championships in Berlin, which was a joint British record.
In 2019, Eilidh was part of the largest group of Scottish athletes ever chosen for a British team at a European Indoor Championships in over 50 years.
Retirement from Running
In August 2019, Eilidh announced she would take a break from the rest of the season because she was expecting a baby in January 2020. She planned to return to athletics after the birth.
Eilidh Doyle officially announced her retirement from competitive running in May 2021. She retired as the most decorated Scottish track and field athlete of all time. She earned a total of 17 medals from major championships, including the Olympics, World, European, and Commonwealth Games. If you include the World Relays and Continental Cup, her total medal count is 19.
Life Outside the Track
In October 2015, Eilidh Child married Brian Doyle, who was also a 400-metre runner. Since then, she has competed as Eilidh Doyle.
Eilidh has a degree in Physical Education from Edinburgh University. She used to be a full-time PE teacher at Perth Grammar School. She later decided to focus more on her training, which allowed her to move to Bath.
Eilidh is a big fan of Hearts FC, a football club, and has a season ticket. She wears a maroon and white wristband during all her races to show her support for the club.
