Martin Luther at Wartburg

In 1521, the famous reformer Martin Luther hid in Wartburg Castle. He was in danger because of his ideas about the church. While he was there, he translated the New Testament of the Bible into German. This was a huge step because it meant more people could read the Bible for themselves. His translation greatly influenced the German language.

Other Events at the Castle

The castle was also home to Saint Elisabeth of Hungary in the 13th century. Later, in 1817, a big student gathering called the Wartburg Festival took place here. Students protested for a united and free Germany.

City Development

Over the centuries, Eisenach became an important trading town. It was known for its markets and crafts. Like many old cities, Eisenach has faced changes, including the demolition of some historic buildings in the 1970s and 1980s. However, much of its charm remains.
