El Cajon Mountain, often called El Capitan or El Cap, is a well-known mountain in the Cuyamaca Mountains. It's a famous natural landmark in the eastern part of San Diego County, California. This mountain is a popular spot for outdoor adventures and offers amazing views of the surrounding area.

Where is El Cajon Mountain?

El Cajon Mountain stands tall at 3,648 feet (1,112 meters) above sea level. Most of the mountain is part of the Cleveland National Forest. It also includes the County of San Diego's El Capitan Open Space Preserve. This means much of the mountain is protected land, helping to keep its natural beauty safe.

Hiking El Cajon Mountain: A Big Challenge

One of the most popular ways to experience El Cajon Mountain is by hiking its main trail. This trail starts near Lakeside, California. It's known as one of the toughest hikes in San Diego County!

Why is it so hard? The trail has many steep climbs and goes over rolling hills. This makes for a challenging workout, but reaching the top is very rewarding. Hikers get to see incredible views of the landscape around San Diego.
