El Carmen is a town and a special area called a commune in Chile. It is located in the Diguillín Province, which is part of the Ñuble Region.

About the People of El Carmen

The leader of the commune is called an alcalde (mayor). The mayor is chosen by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the mayor of El Carmen was Juan Diaz González. He ran as an independent candidate.
Representing El Carmen
The people of El Carmen also have representatives in the national government. These representatives speak for the commune in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in Chile.
