Krency Garcia, who many people know as El Prodigio, is a super talented accordion player from the Dominican Republic. He is famous for playing a type of music called merengue típico. Early Life and Musical Journey
Krency Garcia started playing the accordion when he was very young. Imagine, he gave his first public show when he was only 5 years old! After that, he even played on children's TV shows in the Dominican Republic.
Later, El Prodigio went to the Berklee Institute of Music in the United States. There, he studied jazz music. He then used what he learned about jazz to make his own music even more interesting. He often adds jazz ideas to his accordion playing and his albums.
His Unique Sound
El Prodigio is known for mixing different music styles. He combines traditional merengue típico with other sounds, like jazz. He also plays his own versions of famous songs, including traditional merengue and salsa tunes. Some of these include "Juanita Morel" and "La Vida es un Carnaval." He has even played his own versions of American songs like "Mountain Dance" and "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles.
While some other accordion players, like Geovanny Polanco and Kerube, stick to more traditional merengue típico, El Prodigio loves to try new things. He has added instruments like the trombone, trumpet, and wurlitzer piano to his band. His band also uses the usual merengue típico instruments: the accordion, tambora (a type of drum), güira (a metal scraper), conga drums, electric bass, and saxophones.
