History of El Progreso
How El Progreso Was Formed
The municipality of El Progreso was officially created on October 6, 1884. This happened during the government of General Justo Rufino Barrios. It seems there was already a settlement called Achuapa in the same spot. This settlement then changed its name to El Progreso.
Early Settlers and Their Crops
The very first people to live here were the Pipiles. They were an indigenous group. They grew important crops like maize (corn), cacao, and especially annatto. Annatto is a plant used for its seeds, which give a red-orange color. They grew these crops in the valleys of Achuapa, Morán, and Chiquito.
The name "Achuapa" likely comes from "achioti," which is the achiote tree that produces annatto. "Pan" means "place." So, Achuapa means "place of achiote." Scientists have found signs of these early settlers along the Morán and Chiquito Rivers.
Local Celebrations
On January 24, 1939, the government agreed to start a special Catholic Church celebration. This feast day honors the Virgin of Lourdes and takes place in early February. The modern municipality was officially set up by a government rule on September 20, 1987.
The local festivals used to be held around Trinity Sunday in May or June. Now, they are celebrated around February 11. This date remembers Our Lady of Lourdes.
