A Look Back: The History of El Río
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 2,150 people lived in the El Río barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in El Río has grown.
