El Rosario (pronounced el ro-SAH-ree-oh) is a town and a municipality in the country of Honduras. A municipality is like a local government area. It is located in the western part of the Olancho region. The town itself is found at 14°54′18″N 86°42′08″W / 14.90500°N 86.70222°W / 14.90500; -86.70222.

El Rosario is located southeast of Yocón, northeast of Guayape, and northwest of Salamá. This means it's surrounded by other towns in the region.

Life in El Rosario

The town of El Rosario once had several important places for its community. These included a lumber mill, which is a place where wood is cut and processed. There was also a school, a clinic for health care, and a public library. The library was named La Biblioteca Regional de Dr. Dean J. Seibert.

Recent Challenges: Drought

In 2018, El Rosario faced a difficult time because of a drought. A drought happens when there isn't enough rain for a long period. This caused problems for farmers, as their corn and bean crops failed. The August rains, which are usually important for farming, did not arrive that year.

Local residents believe that this drought is connected to climate change. They also think that too much logging, which is cutting down trees, has made the problem worse. Logging has reduced the pine forests around the town, which can affect the local weather patterns.

Who Lives in El Rosario?

In 2013, a census was taken in Honduras to count the population. At that time, the El Rosario municipality had 4,224 people living there.

A smaller number of people are Black or Afro-Honduran, meaning they have African heritage.
