El Yunque is a cool mountain in Cuba, about 575 meters (1,886 feet) tall. It's located just 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west of Baracoa in the Guantanamo Province. This mountain looks like a giant flat-topped table, or even an anvil! That's why it's called "El Yunque," which means "the anvil" in Spanish.
Discover El Yunque
This special mountain was even mentioned by Christopher Columbus! He wrote about it when he first explored the Americas. El Yunque sits between two rivers, the Duaba and the Toa. It stretches for about 1,125 meters (3,691 feet) and covers a large area of 461,000 square meters (4,962,160 square feet).
El Yunque is so important that it was named a National Monument by the Cuban National Commission of Monuments. This happened on December 25, 1979.
Nature and Plants
The top of El Yunque is covered with beautiful Cuban moist forests. These are lush, green forests that get a lot of rain. On the lower parts of the mountain, you'll find farms growing cocoa bean plants. These plants grow well in the shade of tall royal palm trees.
