The Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountain range, also known as Macizo Nipe Sagua Baracoa, is a large group of mountains in eastern Cuba. It is a very important natural area known for its amazing plants and animals.

Where is the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa Mountain Range?

This mountain range is mostly found in the Holguín Province and Guantánamo Province of Cuba. A small part also reaches into the Santiago de Cuba Province.

The Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountains stretch for about 187 kilometers (116 miles) long and 50 kilometers (31 miles) wide. They start near Nipe Bay in Mayarí, Holguín, and go all the way to Maisí in the eastern part of Guantánamo.

This range is next to the Sierra Maestra mountain range. Its highest point is Pico Cristal, which is 1,231 meters (4,039 feet) tall. This makes it the second highest peak in Cuba, after Pico Turquino (1,974 meters or 6,476 feet).

Several rivers flow through these mountains, including the Toa, Mayarí, and Sagua de Tánamo.

What are the Parts of the Range?

The Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountain range is made up of several smaller mountain groups:

  • Sierra del Nipe: Its highest point is the Loma de la Mensura, which is 994 meters (3,261 feet) high.
  • Sierra Cristal: This group contains the highest peak of the entire range, Pico Cristal, at 1,231 meters (4,039 feet).
  • Cuchillas de Moa: These mountains surround the city of Moa. Their highest peak is Pico del Toldo, reaching 1,175 meters (3,855 feet).
  • Cuchillas de Baracoa: Located near the city of Baracoa, these mountains have a maximum height of 788 meters (2,585 feet).
  • Cuchillas del Toa: The highest point here is Pico Galán, which is 974 meters (3,196 feet) tall.
  • Sierra del Purial: This part of the range reaches a maximum height of 1,059 meters (3,474 feet).
  • Sierra de Imías: Near the town of Imías, its highest peak is Pico el Gato, at 1,176 meters (3,858 feet).

Amazing Nature and Wildlife

The Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa region is famous for its incredible biodiversity, meaning it has a huge variety of plants and animals. It is home to important protected areas like the Sierra Cristal National Park and the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park. It also includes the Cuchillas del Toa biosphere reserve.

One very special animal found here is the rare Cuban solenodon. This small, shrew-like mammal is found only in this part of the world!
