Elaine Fantham (born May 25, 1933 – died July 11, 2016) was an amazing British scholar. She was known as a classicist, which means she studied the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome, especially their languages and writings.

She was a top professor of Latin at Princeton University from 1986 to 1999. She also led the Department of Classics at Princeton for a few years, from 1989 to 1992. In 2004, she was the president of a big group for scholars called the American Philological Association.

What Did Elaine Fantham Study?

Elaine Fantham was a super expert in Latin literature. This means she knew a lot about books, poems, and plays written in Latin by the ancient Romans. She especially loved studying:

  • Comedy: Funny plays from ancient times.
  • Epic Poetry: Long, exciting poems about heroes and big adventures, like the stories of Virgil or Homer.
  • Rhetoric: The art of speaking or writing well and persuasively. Think of it as how people in ancient Rome gave powerful speeches.
  • Roman Religion: The beliefs and practices of the ancient Romans, including their gods and goddesses.

Sharing Her Knowledge

Beyond teaching at universities, Elaine Fantham also shared her knowledge with a wider audience. She was a classics commentator on NPR's Weekend Edition. This means she would talk on the radio about ancient history and literature, helping people understand these fascinating topics.
