Elbert D. Glover is an American researcher and author. He worked as a professor at the University of Maryland at College Park School of Public Health. There, he led the Department of Behavioral and Community Health from 2005 until he retired in 2015.

About His Life
Elbert D. Glover was born in 1945 at the Kingsville Naval Base in Kingsville, Texas. His father was in the U.S. Navy at the time. He is the oldest of eight children.
After finishing high school in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1963, he went to Texas Tech University. He played football there on a scholarship and graduated in 1969. He then earned a master's degree in 1972 from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M Kingsville). In 1977, he received his PhD from Texas Woman's University. All of his degrees were in health education.
Mr. Glover taught at several universities throughout his career. These include Texas A&M University, the University of Kansas, and Texas Christian University. He also worked at Oklahoma State University, East Carolina University, and Pennsylvania State University.
From 1990 to 2005, he was a professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine. While there, he helped start several research centers. These included the Tobacco Research Center and the Addiction and Psychiatric Medicine Research Center.
After that, he became a professor and chairperson at the University of Maryland at College Park School of Public Health. He also started the Center for Health Behavior Research there. He retired in 2015 and was named a professor emeritus.
His Research Work
Dr. Glover's early research looked at smokeless tobacco. But his main focus became finding ways to help smokers quit. He studied different medicines and methods to help people stop using tobacco.
He led studies using many forms of nicotine replacement. These included nicotine gum, transdermal patches (skin patches), oral nicotine inhalers, nasal sprays, and sublingual tablets (tablets that dissolve under the tongue).
He also tested other medicines like bupropion and varenicline. These medicines were later approved for use in the U.S. to help people quit smoking. He also looked into other substances that might help, such as lobeline and certain anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medicines.
Dr. Glover received research money from important government groups. These include the U.S. Department of Education, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institutes of Health. He also worked with companies that make smoking cessation aids.
Professional Achievements
Dr. Glover has written or helped write over 200 professional articles. He also helped secure about $45 million in research funding, mostly for tobacco-related studies.
He gave more than 550 talks and workshops to doctors about tobacco. He also made 335 presentations at national and international health meetings.
He was the owner, publisher, and editor of the American Journal of Health Behavior, Health Behavior and Policy Review, and Tobacco Regulatory Science. He later sold his parts of these journals in 2020 and 2021.
In 1997, he founded the American Academy of Health Behavior and was its first president. The academy honored him with awards like Fellow (1998), Research Laureate (2008), and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2000). He was also named a fellow of the American School Health Association and the Royal Institute of Public Health.
